Soaked
The heavy raindrops that fell from the sky were warm as they dropped softly on his face. He kept his eyes closed and his back on the grass as he thought about how it can rain on one side of the street, but not the other. He thought about how when he was by himself there was nothing to pretend. He thought about how the plants grew at their own pace, and how electric fences kept both the good things and the bad things out. He let the rain soak him to the bone and the warmth drain out of him. He looked at the clouds and their different shades of gray. He saw his thoughts collide and disappear. He felt the dew from the grass between his fingers and heard only his voice in his head. And all at once, he knew who he was. Then he stood up and walked away from the direction he had come.
