Winning the Queen
In an enchanted forest, there were many wild animals. Birds wore a blanket of feathers on their wings that were as long as twelve inch rulers. As they took flight they would sing in the sky as the warm summer breeze carried them above white clouds. The wolves would always listen to the birds chirping melodies with their brown, furry, cone-shaped ears. They would shake their yard-long tails and join the birds’ chorus with their base toned howling. Frogs would swim across ponds and lakes while croaking various beats and rhythms. Fish also jumped out of lakes and helped set the tempo. It was as if they were a professional animal choir that was practicing for a show. The only thing that was missing was an ending performance. So the birds, wolves, frogs, and fishes decided to go on a “talent search” for their next group of choir members. What the animal choir didn’t realize was that their newest members of their group were actually living right beside them.
In the enchanted forest, past an acre long healthy sunflower field was an ancient tree as colossal as a skyscraper. It has been known as the center of the enchanted forest and the most sacred place to every creature that’s lived here. The tree is also a main source of food for nearly every creature. Exactly half-way up the tree hangs a golden colored bee hive covered in excess honey. Inside the structure lives a swarm of buzzing, black and yellow striped bees along with ten pounds of rich, smooth, honey. Everyday animals of different shapes, sizes, and species gather around the bee hive and receive half a pound of honey in exchange for a freshly picked sunflower.
That sunflower is then given to the Queen Bee as a meal. Queen Bee is the only female bee in her community and she is the leader. She gets whatever she wants, whenever she wants it. All of the male bees believe that she deserves the best, and only the best. Queen Bee’s job is to keep producing more bees in order to keep up with the animals’ demand for more honey. If she produces enough bees, then her bee community can pollinate enough flowers in one day in order to make enough honey.
As time goes by Queen Bee realizes that she isn’t getting any younger. She must get married and produce a new Queen Bee. Queen Bee decides to accept the assistance of her best bee, Worker Bee. Worker Bee is Queen Bee’s number one bee. He is one of her best pollinators and knows everything that is necessary in order to take care of Queen Bee. He always smiles and buzzes when he’s around her and never wants to disappoint Queen Bee. “How may I serve you, my Queen?” Worker asks in a polite tone. Queen Bee says, “I want you to spread the word that I am looking for a husband as soon as possible” Worker starts buzzing with a high pitched tone and smiles. “Is every bee eligible, my Queen?” he asks. “Yes, and don’t take all day. I have a few errands for you to complete for me” Queen Bee replies. Worker Bee quickly spreads the word around the hive and then heads for the fields where he talks to Huey Bee.
Huey Bee is one of the top ten ranked bees in his community. He is also a personal friend of Worker Bee. Everything seems to come quite easily for him. He is an extremely fast learner and keeps up with how much honey the bee community is making and how much they actually need. “What’s going on around here?” Huey asks with a curious look upon his face. Worker replies,” Queen Bee is looking for a husband isn’t that great? I’m going to………..” Huey then gets an image of himself being married to Queen Bee. Every bee keeps calling him King Huey and he gets to eat as much honey as he desires while being showered with expensive gifts forever. “Huey? Huey? Did you hear me?” Worker asks. Huey replies, “Hmm? Oh, yeah I heard you. I can’t wait to propose to Queen Bee and become filthy rich.” Then Worker asks, “You didn’t hear a word I just said did you? I told you that I’m..........” Before Worker can finish his sentence Huey flies home to tell his brother, Brucey Bee, his life changing news.
Brucey Bee is one of the worst bees in the community. The only assignment he has been productive with is lifting very heavy and dense supplies and objects. His body shape is also a bit more intimidating than the rest of the bee community. As soon as Huey arrives, he gets tackled by Brucey. Brucey asks, “Hey little bee brother. Why are you so happy? Does it have to do with the fact that Queen Bee is looking for a husband. Huey replies, “How did you find out so quickly?” Brucey smirks and says, “I know everything little bee brother. I can’t believe I’m going to be living in the lap of luxury once Queen Bee and I get married.” “You’re proposing to Queen Bee?” Huey asks with a flabbergasted look on his face. “Yep, say goodbye to Brucey Bee, and say hello to King Brucey.” Brucey explains with a confident smile on his face.
Huey begins walking back and forth as Brucey glances at him while Huey’s pacing across the floor of their honey-comb shaped home. Huey then looks at his brother and says, “Brucey, I’m proposing to Queen Bee later.” Brucey then interrupts and shouts, “Not if I get there first little bee brother!” Huey and Brucey race to Queen Bee’s chambers inside the peak of the golden colored bee hive. By surprise, Worker is also heading to Queen Bee’s chambers. At the same time Huey, Brucey, and Worker asked Queen Bee, “Will you marry me my Queen?”
Being taken by surprise, Queen Bee informs Huey, Brucey, and Worker that they must prove their worth to her and compete for her hand in marriage. The next day they are instructed through a Bee-Triathlon. Their first challenge is to collect and stack fresh sunflowers that create a 3 yard long path. Worker comes in first place, Brucey was second, and Huey came in third. The next challenge was to lift as many pounds of honey as they could in one try. Brucey wins first place, Huey was second, and Worker came in third. The third challenge was to race across the acre long sunflower field three times without stopping. Huey finishes first, Worker is second, and Brucey comes in third. Since Huey, Brucey, and Worker were all victorious in an event, Queen Bee decides to have a tie breaker. The winner of the tie breaker will be married to Queen Bee and be rightfully known as King.
After several minutes of deliberation Queen Bee comes up with a final challenge. With a serious tone in her voice Queen Bee states, “The bee who will take my hand in marriage will be the sole survivor of a sting-off.” “Hey Huey, what’s a sting-off?” Brucey asks. Huey answers and says, “It’s a battle to the death competition where bees sting each other to achieve dominance.” Brucey’s and Huey’s faces immediately turn pale as they stare at each other. Huey glances over at Worker and asks him, “Is there a possible chance that I can quit the competition?” Brucey joins the conversation by saying, “Me too? I don’t want to risk my life or my little bee brother’s life over something that looks like a phenomenal opportunity but is actually a bad choice.” Queen Bee over hears the conversation and rudely interrupts. “You two bees will not reject your Queen! I am your ruler, and you will fight for my hand in marriage!” Brucey then questions the Queen and asks, “What if we refuse to fight for your hand?” “Then your wings will be clipped, and you will both be beheaded!” Queen Bee says with authority.
The moment Queen Bee finishes stating her demands, Worker makes a confession. “My Queen, I beg of you to please spare their lives. I have always loved you and it would be my honor to take your hand in marriage.” Queen Bee then smiles while whispering, “My King Worker.” While Queen Bee and newly addressed King Worker stare at each other, Huey and Brucey fly away from their golden colored bee hive, head down the ancient tree, go past the acre long healthy sunflower field, and go into hiding from their bee community.
After a few weeks of hiding in solitude, Huey and Brucey hear animal noises coming from outside of their new rock home near a lake. They could recognize birds chirping, wolves howling, frogs croaking, and fish jumping in and out of the water. Brucey then asks “Is that an animal choir?” Huey then starts buzzing with a high pitched tone and smiles just like Worker used to. Brucey joins in with a low pitched tone. After a few more moments of melodies being heard throughout the atmosphere, the music stops. It became so silent that no creature could hear a single breath or heartbeat coming from others. Huey and Brucey decide to go outside and investigate.
As soon as Huey and Brucey fly outside they become swarmed by members of the animal choir. “Hey I like your sound.” a bird said. “You two have real potential.” says a wolf. “Have you ever thought about going professional?” a frog asks. “Have you two ever written a personal song?” The fish asks. “We just made up a song about our past experiences.” Brucey replies. Huey then says, “It’s called All That Glitters Is Not Gold.
