Wonderful Things
The simple things. The wonderful things.
A shining full moon glowing in the inky black sky, stars sprinkled on the background like sugar. You sit at your window, staring into that beautiful light, as cricket chirps bounce in the silent night air.
Holding open a door for a stranger who’s staggering out of school with Santa’s sack weighing on their back 'cept instead of gifts, the sack carries books and homework. The quick smile of thanks they give as you help them haul their items onto the bus. The temporary feeling of bonding you have.
A rake dragging all those leaves into a huge fiery-colored pile of crunching dry nature. Brushing the leaves from the roof and cracking a joke while working. Your partner grins and sweeps what you drop into the main spot. Suddenly your little sibling bursts out of the house and swan dives into your hard work. Their little head protected with a wool hat pops out of the red, orange and yellow. Smiles and laughs.
The yells and screams of encouragement as you play against others in games. Sweat pouring off your skin as you try to throw in one more point for the team. Family and friends jumping up and down in excitement in the spectator stands. And then shaking hands with the opposing players in good sportsmanship.
A friend giving you a humorous birthday card. Blowing out the small fire that dances on wax, sticking out of your yearly sweet. The awkward but funny cheer and the cake knife sliding through the yummy layers of icing and bread.
Someone wrapping their arms around you. Feeling the warmth of their hold and knowing they care.
A hug. A kiss.
Family. Friends.
Simple things.
Wonderful things.
