Tyler’s eyes weighed down like weights as he looked through the scope of his rifle. The midnight-colored rifle which was about a third of his own body weight pressed him lower to the ground. He laid on the rosewood-colored sand, while sweat came crawling off his nose. His ocean eyes pierced through the scope and searched for any sign of life. His mission was between him and his squad only. It was top secret. As he lay there he started to think about his family back home. He suddenly saw his son with blonde hair and emerald green eyes laying beside him pretending to be on the lookout as well.  On the other side, he could see his daughter with fiery red hair picking flowers as bright as the sun with his wife whose hair blew in the wind as she picked up a handful of daffodils. As he was about to tell them how much he missed them the sand blew and they vanished. All he could do was look around somewhat dazed with a huge smile on his face. After some grain of sand got into his eye he remembered that once the mission was completed he could go back to his family. He once again scanned through the scope hoping to be able to complete his mission. Nothing once again.

“Goddammit,” he muttered as he continued searching miles out.

“Don’t talk like that, honey,” his wife said as she appeared once again.

“Macy? I can’t believe it’s actually you,” he said as he put his rifle down and stood up.

“I love you so much,” she cried as she wrapped her arms around him.

“I love you too,” He said while embracing her.

As he stood there staring into her eyes, she once again vanished. He was now determined to return home to his wife and his children. As he started to get low to the ground to refocus there was an echoing bang. Tyler fell to the ground and held onto his abdomen as his vision slowly blurred. While his vision faded to black he could see his loving family standing above him comforting him in what he thought were his last minutes. He knew they weren’t really there but it made him feel as if he weren’t alone. As he started to feel cold in the scorching desert he clenched his rifle and shook the idea of dying from his mind. He picked up his rifle with all the strength he had left and positioned it against his eye. As his eyes were fighting to stay open, he was on the verge of collapsing, he found a figure through the scope and pulled the trigger.

I decided to make it as if he were on a mission because the prompt reminded me of the movie Extraction. In the movie, the main character has to go off and complete his dangerous mission. This is where the idea of my own character having to complete a mission comes into play. I tried to make it seem as if he was going to make it out alive and make it back home but instead, he ended up getting shot. I added details specifically about how his eyes weighed down to show how tired he was and how he had already been there for a long time. Another thing I wanted to do was to include his family, I made him hallucinate throughout the story to show that even in moments where his life is in danger he is always thinking about his family. The idea to include something about family originally started from a Dom Toretto meme where he would say that family is the most important thing. Although the idea did start from something funny I turned it into something more serious and made it part of his character.
