Lancaster, PA: After living through college applications with my sister, college tours would be the next step. I decided to tag along when she toured Franklin and Marshall last summer. Founded in 1787, it was named for Benjamin Franklin and former Supreme Court justice John Marshall. Located deep in Amish country in Lancaster, it is typical to see a horse and buggy ride down the street. Enrolled at F&M are about 1800 students; 500 are freshmen and of those 1800 students, 10% of them are from foreign countries.

Its library with over 300,000 government documents and microfilms has been an official depository of the United States government since 1895.

With over 100 clubs and extracurricular activities, it gives students great opportunities to expand their horizons. NBA's Philadelphia 76ers even hold their training camp at F&M.

Noted for their programs in pre-law and pre-medical, Franklin and Marshall is considered "sub-Ivy;" the school is just below those Ivy League schools in stature. A great school, and even better surroundings, make Franklin and Marshall a foundation upon which to build a great life. n
